During the summer, we visited Packwood House just outside Solihull.

It’s a National Trust place, which actually has a few other nearby too, but you’ll still need to book entry. Now that they kids have gone back to school though, this should at least be a bit easier than in previous months.

The site itself is lovely, with a big house, parklands and woods to walk through, and formal gardens to explore.

Welly Walk

I took my kids on the ‘Welly Walk’ that took us through a field of sheep (game: dodge the sheep poo!).

It goes off to the left and there is a stone-lined path with fallen tree trunks to balance on or climb over, and lots of nature to see.
Children can get involved with building dens in two of the four play glades, play woodland hoopla and a tree xylophone, and even sit down on log tables and chairs (that you can arrange yourself).

For the most part, you can take a buggy, as long as you’re taking the well-trodden paths. It does go off into the parklands that I think you’d struggle to use them on, however. I found that the best way to do it was to cross the field, wander through the woods, and then cut back across, towards the cafe.

Once back, you can cross the road and visit the restored Tudor 16th century house and gardens too.

There is a lake that leads you around a short walk, or you can take the slightly longer one. You can also sit and picnic in the little grassy area, which is perfect for little ones to run around in.

All routes lead to the house, so if you’d like to visit, it’s open Friday-Tuesday for a look now. The chap who signed us in was full of facts about the house, and there was even a few Dalmatian ornaments for the kids to spot in the rooms too.
It’s currently operating on a one-way system with social distancing in place, so no buggies are allowed.

The cafe and shop are open, with indoor and outdoor seating areas.

Toilets are near to the car park, with separate disabled and baby change.

Please note: It is called the ‘Welly Walk’ for a reason – remember your boots and waterproofs if it’s been wet!
