Are you and your kids into open water swimming? If so, Alderford Lake in Whitchurch is a great place to go.
Not many lakes or ponds are suitable for swimming, but this one definitely is.It’s a little jaunt from Warwickshire depending on where you are, but for us, it was a stop off on our way back from our break in Wales, so about half way. It’s also an ideal location to meet up with my family who live in Shropshire.
It’s more than just a lake too, so there’s loads to do.
Wild swimming for families
For those who’d like to be in the water, the lake has great water quality and attracts all types of swimmers. You are welcome to swim, bring along your own canoes, kayaks or paddle boards, or just dip a toe in.
The lake is open for swimming during opening hours, seven days a week, all year round. We recommend a wet suit though, as the water can be a bit cold!
It costs £5 for adults or £3 for children who wish to enter the lake.
You can also hire kayaks and equipment too.
Alderford Aqua Park
Alderford also has an inflatable aqua park to climb, jump and bounce on. You can book a 40 minute session throughout the summer holidays and practice your inner Ninja Warrior.
A session will set you back £10 each so it’s not cheap, but it’s guaraunteed fun for active kids!
Open between 22nd July until 1st September 2020.
This year, Alderford has redesigned its Maize Maze to show appreciation for the NHS. Children can enjoy sack races, bean bag races, tug of war, splat the rat, sandcastles and more inside the maze.
The maze is open 18th July until 31st August 2020.
Tickets are £7 each, free for under 2s.
The lake is around 0.8km all the way around, and there are woodlands surrounding it for all ages to explore.
There is also a little wooden hut with a rope swing and climbing net which is run by Shropshire Wildlife Trust.
Kids will find a wooden play area too.
Entry for walks is only £1 for adults, 50p for kids, and free for under 3s.
The cafe is currently running as a takeaway, and food is quite reasonably priced. You’ll also find a waterfront bar, ice cream carts, a waffle van, and clean portable toilets including baby change and disabled.
You can also hire glamping pods for peaceful getaways too.
